Fundamentalist forces, both left and right, are poised to enforce their narrow view upon the masses. Each side believes they're metaphysically correct. Many would have you believe that the Republic is on the brink. The fear du jour is that we are a hair away from a religious police state run by fundamentalist Christians. How then do you explain the Michael Jackson verdict? How can a black man accused of molesting young boys walk free in a fundamentalist, right-wing, whitebread theocracy? Not enough proof, the jury says. Who needs proof in a mullahcracy? The slightest suggestion of wayward behavior brings draconian reprisals in countries where freedom takes a backseat to cleric/thugs.
Jackson walked free because the opposition couldn't prove their case based upon the rules of law. The same rules of law that protects you, me, Jerry Falwell, Elmer Fudd, and Howard Dean. The rules still matter. The jury acted as responsible citizens and not hysterical, pious acolytes. The case for the Republic becoming a theocracy or an agnostic pool of postmodern goo are the scare tactics of malicious, influence peddlers who deal a steady stream of cynicism and elitism.
Speaking of Howard Dean, how do you like a politician, a professional manipulator and obfuscator, flapping his cakehole about what constitutes and honest day's work? Oy vey. How much disbelief do you need to suspend to agree with that guy?
